Animated Couples - Hercules and Megara

Appeared in - Hercules (1997)
Voice actors - Tate Donovan and Susan Egan

Story:
Megara is a very special heroine. Special how? She's the first Disney heroine with essential knowledge:
All men are idiots.
But they're nevertheless lovable.
Her sandals had to go a long way to learn that. Since that time when she sold her soul to the Underworld God Hades to save her boyfriend, and he broke up with her still, she's not very keen on romance. That is until Hercules stumbles into her life. Definitely the oddest guy she's ever set her purple eyes upon. For one, he's so strong he could lift her up with a finger, but at the same time he's totally clumsy and naive and somewhat...sweet. He's so overwhelmed by her that his tongue seems to have one of those tough, greek knots in it.
Surprisingly, it's none other but this Herc that Hades has chosen as his numero uno archnemesis. The boy, in fact, is Hades' own nephew, his brother Zeus's son, and Hades stole him from Mount Olympus as a baby, to make him mortal and kill him. First thing suceeded, but Hercules survived - so now Hades sends an entire army of beasts against him - Nothing helps. Meg watches this all from her own point of view, and is growing fonder of "Wonderboy" than she wants to admit.
Hades sends Meg to flirt around with him a bit and find out if he has any freakin weakness. Herc enjoys Meg's company more than anyone else's, and that feeling is mutual, but, well...Meg is torn like never before. She has fallen in love, though she thought she'd have learned from the past, she doesn't want to be hurt again. She must work for Hades, but she knows she brings Hercules in danger. Arrgh, love's more complicated than all of the mazes in all Greek myths combined!
Hades makes use of this situation, knowing now that Herc would do ANYTHING for Megara. Even sacrifice his own life. But not only Hades watches this, and there are a lot of gods on Mount Olympus that have a lot more sanity in their immortal heads than him. They appreciate Herc's sacrifice and are willing to give him immortality - but what is an immortal life without Meg? So when Hades is defeated, Hercules and Megara can cherish their love - for a limited, mortal time, but they both know it'll be worth it.

Summary:
If you ask me, Herc and Meg's romance is one of the sweetest and strongest in any Disney movie. It starts out rather funny, but digs very deep into the very souls of them, especially in Meg's case. It takes her a lot of courage to overcome her own fear and trust her feelings for Herc, making her one of the most interesting Disney characters. On the other hand, there's Hercules. His sacrifice for Meg's life is one of the most powerful aspects of the movie, it shows how deeply he's in love with that girl. Herc's goal, he thought, was solely to become a God again, but all he really wants is to belong somewhere, to have someone to trust. He finds this someone in Meg, and doesn't need immortality to be happy as long as he can be with her. That's a great bunch of messages in just one romance :)

Not-so-ancient quotes:

"You know, when I was a kid I'd have given anything to be just like everyone else."
"You wanted to be petty and dishonest?"
"Everyone's not like that!"
"Yes, they are..."
"You're not like that."
"How do you know what I'm like?"
"All I know is you're the most...amazing person with weak ankles I've ever met!"

Megara: What are you doing! Without your strength, you'll be killed!
Hercules: There are worse things.

Herc: Kids? Trapped?! That's great!!
Meg: You're really choked up about this, aren't ya?

Herc: When I'm with you, I don't feel so...alone.
Meg: Sometimes it's better to be alone.
Herc: What do you mean?
Meg: Nobody can hurt you.

"But...you...aren't you a damsel in distress?"
"I'm a damsel, I'm in distress, I can handle this! Have a nice day."

Phil: [About Meg's death] I'm sorry, kid. There's just some things that you can't change.
Herc: Yes, I can!!
